The primary mission of the Norwegian Veterinary Institute (NVI) is to give research-based advisory support to the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA) and other governing authorities in the food-production chain from farm and fjord to fork.

A main concern for the NVI is to provide government with scientific based administrative support in matters bearing on food safety, feed hygiene – and animal, shellfish and fish health.

Research is necessary to developing and updating diagnostic and analytical methodology for the purpose of gaining knowledge of etiologies, zoonoses, food and feed quality. Such research will be fundamental to preventive health work and disease containment. Also, the NVI does research in order to provide advice based on science and contributes to international developments taking place in the above expert fields. Such research embraces basic activities in pathology, microbiology, immunology, chemistry, toxicology and epidemiology, as well as applied problem scenarios related to food safety and various diseases found among livestock, fish, shellfish and wild animals.

In wishing to intensify its research work, the NVI hopes to attain a lead position internationally, reaching international levels in selected fields of expertise.
